Local Efforts
The Whatcom County Traffic Safety Task Force is a multi-agency effort formed to reduce traffic related injuries in Whatcom County. Since 1998 the task force has partnered with local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, public health professionals, and local educators to form a mutli-faceted approach to preventing collisions on our roadways.
The Task Force is coordinated by the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, and partially funded through a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. Washington State has 23 local task forces that serve 85% of the state's population.
The Whatcom County Traffic Safety Task Force provides many local activities including:
- The coordination of law enforcement emphasis patrols
- Public presentations to local youth, community groups, and other citizens
- Collaboration with other local safety coalitions
- Participation and support for statewide safety campaigns
- Supplying traffic safety information and materials locally
The priorities and focus of the task force are determined by the Project Manager, Project Coordinator, and a Law Enforcement Advisory Board. The activities of the project are determined based on community feedback, collision statistics, and other research.
