Older drivers should keep in mind that some of the changes that occur as you age may affect your driving ability. Always be aware of:

  • Poor eyesight
  • Any medications you are currently taking
  • Loss of control over the car

Also be aware of how loved ones feel about your driving. Often others notice issues with your driving before you do. To assess your own driving visit AARP and take their Driving IQ test.

There are many resources for mature drivers. The AARP offers lots of information for drivers over 50 years of age as well as classes.

If you are concerned about how to begin a discussion with an older driver concerning driving, there are also many resources. It can be difficult to begin a conversation about driving abilities, but it is important to do so. The Hartford has information on Family Conversations with Older Drivers.
